Wizards & Wands: Getting Sorted

OUR HOMESCHOOL ADVENTURE SERIES

Last week we shared some avatars that we'd created on the Wizarding World website but that was only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the fun to be had at this great site!

We've since been sorted into houses, our wands have chosen us, and we each went on an adventure to discover our Patronus!

But that's not even everything!

Read on to find out more!

The thing that we were initially most excited to try out was the house sorting quiz; we all desperately wanted to know which house we would be in so we could commence the 'House Cup' (i.e. playing lots of games together and seeing which house gets the most points by the end of our exploration...yes, we're keeping track of the points!).

The Wizarding World website is wonderfully interactive and accessible for children who are even quite young (our littlest ones wanted to get in on the action and enjoyed creating their own avatars and answering our simplified versions of the quiz questions).

We're still waiting on 'Dad' to complete his profile but so far we have two Gryffindor's, one Ravenclaw, and a Hufflepuff!

Which House will you be?

Wands

The next thing on our list was finding our wands; we didn't realise quite the variety that there are (but we should have after looking at the stacks of wands in Ollivander's in the first Harry Potter movie!).

Again, it's a simple matter of answering a series of quiz questions and BAM your wand chooses you!

The best part of this experience on Wizarding World is the detail - not only do you find out the specifics about your wand (mine is Elm wood with a unicorn core) but the site gives you a description of your wands features.

There are also articles about wand woods and cores; and opportunities to find out about the wands of your favourite characters.

After finding our wands and doing some more exploring in the Wizarding World we came upon a hard decision...will we make our wands or get one of the cool custom made wands available by other crafters and Harry Potter fans - there are loads to choose from and it really depends on what you're looking for (Do you want actual wood? Are you happy with resin? What details are important to you?).

We're yet to decide whether we will whittle our own, experiment with resin craft or buy our wands through a wand maker...but all of the options are enticing and we might end up doing all three!

Check out these wand makers on Etsy if you're interested in getting a replica of your wand from Wizarding World.

Patronus

And the last part of creating your profile on Wizarding World is discovering your Patronus.

You go on a fast-paced, instinct-driven journey through the dark woods and at the end a beautiful creature ghosts across your screen (some more elegantly than others; think hummingbird vs mastiff 😂).

Nonetheless, it is a tonne of fun and really adds to the Harry Potter experience - not to mention all of the information and activities included on the Wizarding World site; like find out what your Patronus means, take part in trivia quizzes, and create a host of delightful crafts.

We are right at the beginning of our Wizarding World adventure and every time we visit the site we find more new things to explore and perhaps the best part is that we are able to bring a lot of it out into our other experiences in our homeschool too! We can't wait to share all of our adventures with you, so join us each Wednesday to learn about something new we're doing in our very our Wizarding World (a.k.a our homeschool)!
